Laser Toenail Fungus

Are your toenails thickened, discolored, and unsightly? If so, you might have toenail fungus or onychomycosis. This common problem has traditionally been difficult to treat. Creams and sprays used alone rarely work because they do not penetrate into the nail. Oral medicine can be effective, but it requires many months of treatment and can cause side effects.

The latest advance is laser treatment for toenail fungus. Studies have shown that the combination of CO2 laser and topical antifungal cream can be very effective. Dr. Ort uses a fractional CO2 laser to instantly ablate or burn hundreds of tiny dots or holes in the nail. Since the nail plate does not have any nerve endings, treatment is virtually painless. The patient is then instructed to apply topical antifungal cream to the nail at home. The holes in the nail produced by the laser allow the cream to penetrate deeply and kill the fungus. The laser treatment is usually performed three times on a monthly basis. Consistent application of the antifungal cream after laser treatment can lead to clearing of the nail over time.

If you or a loved one have toenail fungus but do not want to take oral medicine, consider the combination treatment of CO2 laser plus topical antifungal cream. Dr. Ort is one of the few specialists in the Denver area to offer this advanced laser treatment for onychomycosis.
